Hello, friends! Welcome back to Good Thyme Gal, where today we’re embracing a deliciously nostalgic treat in honor of National Fluffernutter Day! Celebrated each year on October 8th, this fun holiday shines a spotlight on one of the most iconic and quirky sandwiches: the Fluffernutter.

For those of you who haven’t experienced the joy of a Fluffernutter sandwich yet, let me introduce you to this simple, sweet creation. A Fluffernutter is made with two key ingredients—creamy peanut butter and fluffy marshmallow creme—smashed between two slices of soft bread. It’s sweet, salty, sticky, and a whole lot of fun to eat.

Whether you grew up on this childhood favorite or are just discovering it for the first time, National Fluffernutter Day is the perfect excuse to indulge in this delightful combination of flavors. Today, I’m sharing a little history of the Fluffernutter along with a delicious twist on the classic recipe you can try at home.

A Little National Fluffernutter Day History

The Fluffernutter sandwich has roots dating back to the early 20th century. Marshmallow creme, one of its key ingredients, was first invented in 1917 by Archibald Query in Somerville, Massachusetts. Soon after, peanut butter started becoming a pantry staple in many American households. It wasn’t long before someone had the bright idea to spread these two ingredients on bread, creating what we now know and love as the Fluffernutter.

The name “Fluffernutter” itself didn’t come around until the 1960s, when the Durkee-Mower company—the makers of the famous “Marshmallow Fluff”—created an advertising campaign using the name to promote their product. The catchy name stuck, and the sandwich has been a beloved treat ever since.

Plus, it’s incredibly easy to make, requiring just a few ingredients that you likely already have in your kitchen.

Here are a few reasons we love this classic sandwich:

It’s quick and easy: The Fluffernutter requires no cooking or fancy ingredients. It’s the perfect snack or lunch when you’re craving something sweet and satisfying.

Good Thyme Gal Classic Fluffernutter Recipe with a Twist

While the original Fluffernutter sandwich is undeniably delicious, I’m sharing a fun recipe today that adds a little extra flair to this childhood classic. This version includes a hint of cinnamon, a little crunch, and an optional chocolate drizzle for the ultimate sweet treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of soft white or wheat bread

  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter (smooth or crunchy, your choice)

  • 2 tablespoons marshmallow creme or Marshmallow Fluff

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon crushed graham crackers or pretzels (for crunch)

* Optional: melted chocolate for drizzling

Cooking Instructions

1. Start by spreading the peanut butter evenly on one slice of bread.

2. On the second slice of bread, spread the marshmallow creme (or Fluff) generously.

3. If you want to add a fun twist to your Fluffernutter, sprinkle ground cinnamon over the marshmallow creme for a warm, spiced flavor. For added texture, sprinkle the crushed graham crackers or pretzels over the peanut butter. If you’re feeling extra indulgent, toss some mini chocolate chips into the mix!

4. Gently press the two slices of bread together, peanut butter side meeting the marshmallow creme side.

5. For an extra special treat, drizzle some melted chocolate over the top of the sandwich. This step is completely optional, but it adds a fun, decadent twist.

6. Cut your Fluffernutter in half and enjoy it with a cold glass of milk or your favorite hot beverage.

Fun Variations for Your Fluffernutter

One of the best things about the Fluffernutter is how versatile it is! Here are a few fun variations to try if you’re feeling adventurous:

- Banana Fluffernutter: Add slices of banana to the sandwich for a fruity twist.

- Chocolate Hazelnut Fluffernutter: Swap out the peanut butter for chocolate hazelnut spread (like Nutella) for an extra indulgent treat.

- Fluffernutter French Toast: Dip your assembled sandwich in beaten eggs and cook it like French toast for a warm, gooey breakfast treat.
